The complexity of the comorbidity often leads to different opinions among experts. <strong>Using different<\/strong> and sometimes <strong>confusing terms makes things more complicated<\/strong>, especially when trying to diagnose and treat these disorders together.<br><br>The lack of a unified term contributes to more confusion and increased. This also leads to what\u2019s called \u201cwrong door syndrome\u201d, where people struggle to find appropriate care for both their mental health and addiction issues. To address this, the World Association on Dual Disorders (WADD) recommends using the term <strong>\u201cDual Disorder\u201d<\/strong>. This term could make it easier for everyone to understand and talk about these conditions in <strong>a more consistent and less stigmatizing way<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"rea-main rea-page-default\"><div class=\"rea-page-default__wrapper\"><div class=\"\"><div class=\"entry-content\">\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-7c6b25b418cceb01f5b434a6941450b2 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#81b39a;font-size:26px\"><strong>Substance Use in Schizophrenia<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"mb-5 has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-9575e572b248a9ad950cf3076cea8933 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#58595b\">Concerning certain substance use disorders, individuals suffering from schizophrenia often struggle with using tobacco, cannabis, alcohol, and cocaine.<br><br>The lifetime prevalence rates for these substances range between 60 and 90% for smoking tobacco, 17 to 83% for cannabis consumption, 21 to 86% for alcohol consumption, and 15 to 50% for the use of cocaine. These are more than triple compared to the rates of those in the general population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"mb-5 has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-3d23c9bcba6f1dccbedf2cb0f50321c5 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#58595b\"><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image mt-7\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"919\" height=\"524\" src=\"https:\/\/schizophrenia.life\/public\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/substance-use-in-schizophrenia.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5155\" style=\"width:722px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/schizophrenia.life\/public\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/substance-use-in-schizophrenia.png 919w, https:\/\/schizophrenia.life\/public\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/substance-use-in-schizophrenia-300x171.png 300w, https:\/\/schizophrenia.life\/public\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/substance-use-in-schizophrenia-768x438.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 919px) 100vw, 919px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"sod_highlight py-4\"><div class=\"rea-main rea-page-default\"><div class=\"rea-page-default__wrapper my-0\"><div class=\"entry-content\">\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-3117d9de96abd0bc1cd189930d61dce8 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#81b39a;font-size:26px\"><strong>Could a psychotic episode trigger the start of substance use?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-c5aad5fa9a927e03d02eea55d27d9612 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#58595b\">Experiencing a psychotic episode, particularly the first one, and the manifestation of symptoms (for example, auditory\/visual hallucinations, disorganised speech\/thinking) can be without a doubt perceived by individuals as <strong>STRESSFUL AND UNSETTLING STATE<\/strong>.<br><br>Especially when services like emergency or police arrive, the situation may bring about shock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-e6aa563b2410456ecd17a61d9e42e067 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#58595b\">Being devastating both emotionally and psychologically, such events may lead to compulsive decisions to try or use substances.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"rea-main rea-page-default\"><div class=\"rea-page-default__wrapper\"><div class=\"\"><div class=\"entry-content\">\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-3e530bc1623e1827c5f23770169ffd88 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#81b39a;font-size:26px\"><strong>Are people with SUD more vulnerable to developing psychotic disorders?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"mb-5 has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-570f312c4f696cdaf8b786b7b9c08029 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#58595b\">People with psychotic disorders, including those experiencing their first psychotic episode, <strong>are more likely to have substance use disorders<\/strong> compared to the general population.<br><br>Research shows that substance use is common among individuals with first-episode psychosis, with rates between <strong>30%<\/strong> and <strong>70%<\/strong>.<br><br>Compared to healthy individuals, they are more likely to use cannabis daily and to have been smoking it for over five years. Additionally, people with schizophrenia are more often found to have smoked tobacco before the onset of the condition than those without the disorder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"mb-5 has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-727dd54b192cf7424fd723c32a24dd3a wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#58595b\">Many researchers also suggest that cannabis use may contribute to an increased risk of developing schizophrenia.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"sod_highlight py-4\"><div class=\"rea-main rea-page-default\"><div class=\"rea-page-default__wrapper my-0\"><div class=\"entry-content\">\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-94928cbf392941e485ec3f5be50a132d wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#81b39a;font-size:26px\"><strong>At what point in life are these two disorders most likely to intersect?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"mb-5 has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-20ed7c74cabfa12b20b8e75981101fcf wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#58595b\">Despite drug use and addiction being able to occur at any point during one\u2019s life, it is <strong>common for drug use to start in adolescence<\/strong>, the period in which the initial signs of mental illness are most likely to appear.<br><br>Co-occurrence of schizophrenia and substance use disorders is also observed in young individuals. About <strong>64 to 88%<\/strong> of adolescents have at least one co-existing mental disorder on top of a substance use disorder.<br><br>Young men may be particularly sensitive to how cannabis influences schizophrenia. It is suggested that by preventing cannabis use disorder (CUD), about <strong>1 IN 5 CASES<\/strong> of schizophrenia among young men <strong>COULD POTENTIALLY BE AVOIDED<\/strong>.
