Globally, an estimated 400 million people (or 7% of the world\u2019s population aged 15 years and older) live with alcohol use disorders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This disorder <strong>occurs when someone loses control over their drinking<\/strong>, leading to dependence, increased tolerance, and serious negative effects on their mental, physical, and social well-being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It accounts for about <strong>10% OF THE GLOBAL BURDEN<\/strong> of disease related to substance use and mental health disorders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alcohol use disorder is highly disabling and is linked to numerous <strong>health problems, both physical and psychological<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"rea-main rea-page-default\"><div class=\"rea-page-default__wrapper\"><div class=\"\"><div class=\"entry-content\">\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-3cb83c580d93d9ec38f00a2043cc6ac7 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#d7988c;font-size:26px\"><strong>When schizophrenia meets alcohol use disorder<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When someone with schizophrenia also has an alcohol use disorder (AUD), it can make their illness harder to manage.<br><br>This may lead, among others, to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"border-square has-background wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"background-color:#e9c8be\">\u2022 <strong>worsening psychotic symptoms,<\/strong><br><br>\u2022 <strong>more frequent relapses,<\/strong><br><br>\u2022 <strong>lower quality of life,<\/strong><br><br>\u2022 <strong>reduce the effectiveness<\/strong> of antipsychotic medications,<br><br>\u2022 <strong>difficulties adhering to treatment. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Studies have also found that those who drink heavily tend to have a longer history of schizophrenia and often require extended stays in mental health facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For instance, chronic schizophrenia patients with alcohol use disorders tend to experience more severe positive symptoms, such (hallucinations or delusions), and greater levels of depression and negative symptoms ( like emotional flatness) and suicidal behavior compared to those who have never used alcohol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In cases of first-episode psychosis, alcohol use before hospitalization has been linked to more frequent positive symptoms, while also being associated with negative symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moreover, alcohol consumption negatively affects cognitive function and reduces the quality of life in individuals with schizophrenia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also contributes to an increased risk of death from various causes in this population.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"sod_highlight py-4\"><div class=\"rea-main rea-page-default\"><div class=\"rea-page-default__wrapper my-0\"><div class=\"entry-content\">\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-965db423e5178a221b385f3347454024 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#d7988c;font-size:26px\"><strong>Early intervention matters<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Treating schizophrenia alone may not be enough<\/strong> to prevent the onset of alcohol use disorder.
